eBay - Thank You for Your Report Community Watch

I have a habit of reporting eBay sellers for excessive shipping charges. I was looking through listings this morning for grocery coupons - my two teenagers are about to be home for the summer so let's just say I am getting my heavy artillery ready for large amounts of food consumption by them and their friends.

I came across a listing for 5 coupons for Cheetos, and the seller was charging $5.50 shipping. I jumped right on that one and reported the seller for circumventing fees and charging excessive shipping. Most coupon sellers offer free shipping, or shipping costs less than $1. A few hours later, I received this email from eBay:eBay%20Community%20Watch.jpg

"Thank you for taking the time to report this listing for violation of excessive shipping charges policy We are working hard to combat the practice of excessive shipping charges on eBay, and very much appreciate your help in identifying sellers who you believe are charging excessively for shipping. Please continue to report these types of listings to us. We can only clean up this problem by working together."

So, in a nutshell, eBay can't police everything - other members have to report violations when they are discovered. By the way, the listing that I reported was removed. Don't be afraid to report violations of other users - it just takes a minute.

YOUR AN IDIOT, YOU MUST HAVE A LOT OF FREE TIME ON YOUR HAND.. OBVIOUSLY NO ONE CAN OFFER FREE OR LOW SHIPPING, EBAY MAKES MORE MONEY WHEN THE SHIPPING IS LOW. IF YOU HAVE A BRAIN, LOOK AT THE BOTTOM LINE PRICE AND YOU WILL DISCOVER WHETHER ITS A GOOD DEAL OR NOT.

Hello, anonymous, thanks for visiting. I am disappointed that you did not leave your contact information so that I could respond to your comment personally.

First of all, quite a few sellers on eBay offer free shipping. Just do a search for free shipping and notice the number of results returned. Free shipping can easily be offered by building the shipping price into the sales price of the item. This is a common technique in ecommerce - you will see FREE SHIPPING on many major ecommerce sites such as Amazon, Overtstock.com, Zappos (one of the largest shoe retailers on the internet) - the list is endless. Just Google FREE SHIPPING and you will see the massive number of results.

Second, eBay doesn't necessarily make more money when the shipping fees are low. The seller has to sell the item before eBay makes the bulk of its money. So, free shipping is a selling point so both the seller and eBay make money. Would you rather have 92% of something, or 0% of nothing? eBay is becoming more and more competitive, and offering free shipping is one way to have an edge on the competition.

Finally, with the new DSR structure, free shipping is becoming more and more popular with eBay sellers. By offering free shipping, sellers are safeguarding themseleves against low ratings in the "shipping fee category." The higher a seller's DSR, the higher their items rank in Best Match, and the more sales they will make in the future because their listings appear first in search results. Therefore, free shipping is a tool that begins a beneficial cycle of sales/high customer ratings/appearance in searches and back to sales. The cycle feeds on itself producing favorable results.

By the way, you may want to check your grammar. "Your" refers to the possessive case of the word "you" as an attributive adjective . The proper use of the word in your response should be "You're" - the contraction for "you are" - as in "You are an idiot."

Thanks again for visiting and best of luck with your eBay ventures.

I am also one that reports excessive shipping when I come across it. There is nothing more irritating than being overcharged for shipping. Unless those coupons were chiseled on stone, then that is too much to ship 5 coupons.

As someone who does not live in the US, shipping rates from the US certainly factor into my decision to buy. Free shipping would certainly catch my eye.

Excessive shiping sends me running in the opposite direction... not a great way to make a sale. It makes me wonder though, if it is listed, then does that mean there is a market, or are they just trying their luck?

Bravo to you! I also don't hesitate to report excessive shipping, as well as KWS. The problem within the country today is everyone is out for themselves. We need to teach future generations by example. Thank you for letting the world know that honesty, integrity and ethics is important, and still exists.

Thank you for reporting excessive shipping! That is one of my biggest pet peeves on eBay. As a seller myself, I know how much it will cost to ship an item. I see listings all the time for children's shirts and the shipping is listed at $6.00! I refuse to buy from sellers that do this. I will pay more for an item with free or cheap shipping. I hope that more people report these unethical sellers to eBay. If we all stand together and unite, it will ultimately make eBay a better place!
