As eBay continues to change its policies and regulations, more and more alternatives are popping up in cyberspace. A new and interesting alternative is Auction Addict. The site is composed of a mixture of internet giants such as Overstock.com, WalMart.com, Sierra Trading Post, 1-800-Pet Meds, as well as smaller independent sellers.
Members may list items for free, may set up a storefront for free (in 7 easy steps), and there are no commission fees when an item sells. Auction Addict advertises a safe payment system "like Paypal," and checks and money orders are welcome. I am skeptical of any new website that encourages paper transactions in this day and age of electronic payment systems. Paper transactions lend themselves to fraud moreso than electronic payments.![]()
Each seller has a "comments file," similar to a feedback profile. Buyers can check out sellers before a sale to validate their reputation with previous customers.
Auction Addict appears to be dominated by large internet retailers. Categories including clothing, electronics, and computers are heavily stocked while collectible categories including stamps and trading cards have less than 10 items available. The site looks more like Amazon than eBay, but free is free, so give it a try and see what you think. It is always beneficial to have your eggs in more than one basket.
