It's Official - eBay Sellers Will Boycott Feb 18-25

The word on the street is that sellers will boycott eBay during the week of Feb 18-25, the week the new fee changes are instituted. Read the official thread on the eBay forum "Seller Central," and sign your name to the pledge, if you wish. So far, 65 pages of conversation and pledges have been added to the thread.

The strike, or boycott, is about all I am seeing in my groups, forums, news feeds, and on eBay blogs. I'm more than interested to see how many sellers actually pull their listings, or put their stores on vacation. I will not. First of all, I am not that passionate about the changes. I'll adapt and move on.

Secondly, I am a single parent and eBay is how I earn my living, pay my bills, buy groceries, and pay the mortgage. eBay isn't a game for me, it takes care of me and my two children. Sorry, guys, but some of us need the money. I February%20calendar.jpgdon't remember joining a union when I became an eBay seller. I hope to sell more than usual during the strike week since perhaps supply will be lower than normal.

Yesterday, I had a conversation with another seller on a forum, and she was beside herself with hate for eBay - literally having a tantrum. I asked her why she didn't just close up shop and find another venue to sell. Her reply, "I don't want to leave, I just want eBay the way it used to be. It's not fair what they do to sellers." I had to laugh to myself. Somewhat of a spoiled child mentality. It is time to adjust, adapt, think, and decide if you are in this as a business or a hobby. I don't think stomping and yelling is the solution here.

Well said :-)

Hi, Sue - thanks for visiting. And thanks for the vote of confidence! I'll be glad when all this nonsense blows over and we can get back to business! Hope to see you at eBay Live in Chicago in June.

Great article, and I'm glad to see someone else shares my point of view. I'm not thrilled with some of the new policies but like you said...we adjust and move on. I don't plan to boycot, and hope to have increased sales that week as well!

Best Regards,
Jennifer

I used to think I Needed Ebay too - and it's certainly not a game to me. I've been there fore 9 years and have earned power seller status by building a reputation while it allowed me to remain home to take care of my two children with Autism and my two other children.

The problem is, Ebay is really cutting into our profits and this feedback solution of theirs is really going to hurt smaller sellers and thereby make Ebay a place where, as a Power Seller, I won't be proud of belonging.

I'll still use them at auction for awhile - until my new Ruby Lane store and the other places I've diversified pick up. But I will honor the boycott.

I've provided a form on my website for those ebay sellers who also sell elsewhere - you can send your ebay store name or screen name and send us links to the new places you'll be selling. Links help in Google searches - and will also allow us to support each other.

Good luck to all!

I for one will definetly be boycotting for a few reasons.
The fees are to be expected but for those of you taking bending over and taking it in the back i think you are guys are off your rocker. Im a business man so fees are expected to change with the flux in market. But changing the feedback structure is what ebay was built on and is not right. They are making it so that everything favors the buyers and us sellers who have been there from the start are left out to dry. If you are a seller i hope to see you boycott. I think us sellers are split between followers and leaders the leaders want to keep things the same and well speak up to that fact. Followers will take these changes and think things will be ok, of course that is till your feedback gets so low you will have to have a 21 day hold on your money, how are you going to feed your kids then? Something to think about, just my opinion. Those who think that fees are unfair, i think thats kind of unprofessional as fees are always expected to go up, but for things like holds on money and feedback changes. Thats just ridiculous especially when it was us sellers who made ebay. They are kind of biting the hand that feeds them. They lost many high ranking sellers last fee increase and im sure they will lose some this time but whats for sure is they will lose even more because of the feedback change.

Good luck to all during this time of change.

Thank you Suzanne, I couldn't agree more with all you've said. I hadn't thought about the competitive edge for those not boycotting...I'd better get listing!

Hi, the strike is a double edged sword and has caused many folks problems.

I just looked at my fees on amazon and they were between 15.5% and 15.7%. So not sure if they are the right way to go.

There are other venues out there but not with the traffic that eBay gets you...and they know that.
So best to all! It is a tough decision for many but if you do your best you will not have to worry about the rest.

I'm not a power seller. The fees will kill me. I've never received negative feedback but I have received neutral feedback (2) by buyers that was unjust. I don't think it's a good idea to change the feedback. Lots of power sellers get negative feedback and with this new rule they'll probably get more.

There's Mommy Auctions and a new one called Go Green Auctions. They will become well known especially now because a lot of people are looking for other places to auction their items. It's the same way eBay started I would think. Sellers, word of mouth.
