Randy Smythe had an interesting discussion on his Blog Utopia this week. The title of the post was, "Why do sellers stay on eBay?" Randy set up the post in survey format, providing some answers, and asking open ended questions.
The results: The sellers who commented stated that eBay is still a a profitable venue for them. Especially niche sellers who find that eBay connects them with their buyers in a safe, friendly, and efficient manner. Most commenters reported that eBay is just one channel in their marketing plan - they may also have their own website, sell on Amazon, or be involved in multiple businesses.
I have to agree with Gary from the Auction Rebel who
said, "My business philosophy is to turn each piece of inventory as quickly as possible, for the maximum return possible." My thoughts exactly, Gary!
I would like to add that eBay is just like any other business. Do your homework and find out what buyers want and then make it available at a competitive price coupled with excellent customer service. Too many eBay sellers fail because they are doing the reverse - offering items and then trying to find buyers for those items. Research is a huge part of success in any business, including eBay.
Thanks for the post, Randy!

It does not hurt to have more than just one channel for transactions online. eBay is just one tool. Despite all the negative news surrounding eBay, it does not mean you have to automatically withdraw from it. Plus, there are sellers who have already established a strong connection with their buyers through eBay.
