
eBay sellers are becoming more and more concerned about how buyers' ratings will affect their DSR (detailed seller rating). As eBay moves towards prioritizing search results based on DSR scores, I've heard sellers discussing how they can beat the system, or at least survive longer.
One option is to raise your prices enough to cover shipping, then offer free shipping. The idea is that the customer would have to leave a 4 star rating for shipping fees, if none were charged.
The advantage to this technique is obvious - sellers can add the terms "free shipping" to their titles, and some buyers may perceive they are getting a better deal. The disadvantage is that starting prices will be higher.
