As an eBay Power Seller since 2003, I have sold over 14,000 items to customers worldwide. My main product line is clothing. I have experimented with many photographing techniques to best present the item to potential customers. I've found that using a half mannequin is an economical, practical, and easy way to display clothing for photographing.
A half mannequin is a lightweight, hollow, plastic shell with a hook at the top that can be hung over a door or on a hook against the wall. The door or wall behind the mannequin stabilizes the form so that it does not move around. Half mannequins can be purchased on eBay for between $10 and $25, and are available in men's, women's, and childrens sizes.
To create an inexpensive place to photograph your items with the mannequin,
cover a closet door with plain, white butcher paper. Hang a wreath hanger over the top of the door, and hang the half mannequin on the wreath hanger. You can crop the photo so that only the clothing shows in the photo. (The photo shown here is a dress on my female half mannequin.) You can use clothes pins to adjust the clothing on the mannequin for a snug fit. Just be sure that the clothes pins are in the back and don't show in the photo.
A half mannequin is a wise investment if you plan on selling clothing on eBay for any length of time. If you decide to get out of the clothing business or decide you don't like working with the mannequin, you can always sell your mannequin to another seller on eBay.
