When checking the eBay Pulse today, I found this 1916 Babe Ruth Rookie card. The current bid is $9,000, and the item is the most watched item in the sports memorabilia section. As of this writing, the card has 30 bids by 19 different bidders.
This card puts into perspectiv how our culture has changed over the last century -
classic baseball without steroids, growth hormone, or huge multimillion dollar contracts. Imagine it, pure sport, for the love of the sport.
In 1916, Babe Ruth was 21 years old and playing for the Boston Red Sox. Three years later in 1919, he was sold to the Yankees for $100,000. I'm sure "The Sultan of Swat" is rolling over in his grave at the thought of what has happened to the sport of baseball since he played almost a century ago.
