eBay's New Feedback System - No Negs for Buyers

The eBay feedback system as we know it will be a thing of the past starting May, 2008. Sellers will no longer be able to leave neutral or negative feedback for buyers. Nothing will change the way buyers leave feedback for sellers.

This change has been a hot topic on eBay forums and groups today following this announcement. Many sellers think the new policy is completely unfair and and they are already organizing formal attempts to protest the change. I think if sellers take a deep breath and carefully read over the changes in detail, this change really isn't that scary. Read on for points to consider.

1) The general idea behind this change is to eliminate sellers who are not responsive to customers, do not honor their policies, run a sloppy or unethical business in general, or who use feedback as a weapon to prevent buyers from leaving negative feedback. This practice is known as feedback extortion.

2) If a buyer has left a neutral or negative for a seller, then doesn't pay, the seller can still file an unpaid item dispute. If the buyer doesn't respond, the neutral or negative left by the unresponsive buyer will be removed. In other words, if you've got a real deadbeat buyer, he won't last very long on eBay arbitrarily leaving green%20star%20small.jpgnegatives for sellers, and not paying for his items.

3) If a buyer is suspended, all of his neutrals or negatives left for sellers will be removed. Same concept as #2.

4) Negative or neutrals cannot be left until 3 days after the transaction. eBay hopes that this will improve communications between the buyer and seller, and encourage them to work out their differences. Somewhat of a cooling off period.

5) Feedback must be left within 60 days instead of 90 days.

6) Feedback percentage will be based on the previous 12 months According to eBay announcements, "This means that any negative or neutral feedback left for you more than 12 months ago will no longer affect your percent positive."

Bottom line: I think the new system will help weed out unscrupulous sellers who use feedback as a weapon, or who probably shouldn't be selling on eBay at all for their lack of customer service skills. If you're doing everything right as a seller, you don't have anything to worry about.

How many of you routinely leave negatives or neutrals for your buyers? Will this change affect you on a regular basis, or just occasionally?

I know I've never left a negative or neutral feedback ever, that may change after this week, as I've had an unresponsive buyer but I come from old school ebay when a negative could kill you and unless I have zero communication and non payment I really don't feel it is necessary.

I always try to work things out verbally but have found buyers and sellers less and less likely to do that as time goes on...

I leave them for NPBs who don't respond. If after filing the unpaid item reminder, and still nothing, I leave a neg. Usually after a few of these by a few different sellers, the member is suspended.

I haven't left any negative feedback so far. I actually had one buyer who hasn't paid yet for an item and I contacted them three times just to be sure and if I should relist item. I wasn't upset about it and finally heard back from the buyer that a money order is on the way. I am glad to read this article since there are so many writing negative stuff about it. I think communication is very important, especially running an online business. I always try to work things out and feel that is important. We will see how it all works.

I am not one to leave negative feedback anyhow so it really doesn't bother me. Just figure it's another change of the many that will take place through the years.

I started using ebay when it first started. It seemed to be more of a level playing field back then. Now they are trying to control the process too much which is making it unfair to sellers and buyers. I've had bad buyers before and given negative feedback, I think it will just allow more bad buyers online.

I left a negative feedback for a seller who didn't deliver the goods, despite the fact that I had paid immediately after the auction. The seller then left me a negative feedback claiming that I had not responded to e-mails.

I had not recourse, other than a mutually retracted feedback. I don't know if no feedback regarding buyers is the answer, but retaliatory practices by sellers do exist and I have never left a negative rating again!!

it is unfair to the sellers if the buyer can leave a negative and the seller can't.I am one of many ( i'm sure) ebay sellers who have had to deal with buyers who never pay. I also have had to deal with buyers remorse and buyers that aren't happy with anything they recieve, no matter what you offer as a resolution. These are other types of buyers that all ebay sellers need to be aware of , and if ebay takes away our power to leave negative feedback for these types of buyers i for one will be taking my business to a different auction site.

the person who wrote that article doesnt sell on ebay, do they

i got a furious email today that the fabric was too stiff

i leave negs for deadbeats..it helps other sellers in the future plus ebay knows who they are this way

now buyers will use feedback extortion against us

Hi, anonymous, thans for visiting. I am the author of the blog post, and I have been a Power Seller on eBay since 2003. I currently sell 150-200 items a month. Sellers will still be able to file unpaid item disputes against buyers, and report misuse of the feedback system. Please visit eBay's announcement section and read about the changes carefully.

I'm curious, with your situation with your buyer who said the fabric was too stiff, what was your response? Did you give the buyer a chance to return the item? A partial refund? What steps did you take to resolve the situation to your buyer's satisfaction?
