I had an interesting conversation with a client today during a consultation. This individual wanted to set up an eBay store with digital products such as eBooks, videos, and audio recordings. She stated, " I just want to set up an eBay store where everything is automated, all the products are automatically downloaded by the customer, and I just check on it every few weeks." Sounds like a good plan, right? Wrong.
The general public seems to have a perception that eBay selling is sitting at your computer watching the money roll in without doing much work. Unfortunately, few sellers have this luxury. I explained to my client that even if she only offered digital products with automatic downloads, she would still need to check on her
store daily to answer questions from potential buyers, send out invoices, send out payment reminders for non-payers, watch for inventory that might be running low, and watch for feedback comments that may warrant a reply.
Failing to answer questions and interact with customers and potential customers will cost you sales on eBay. Granted, you will want to automate as much of your eBay business as possible without completely removing the human element. Outstanding customer service is what keeps customers coming back, and keeps buyers adding positive feedback points to your score. You'll never establish a reputation as a seller without much positive feedback, and you won't build any positive feedback without providing good customer service to your buyers.
