Selling Counterfeit, Knock-Offs, or Replica Items on eBay
As an eBay consultant, I have been asked, “Can I sell a fake purse on eBay, even if I explain that it is a cheap knock-off?” The answer, “Absolutely not!” eBay has strict policies in place that prohibit the sale of replicas or counterfeit items. These items include everything from jewelry, handbags, pirated software, bootleg recordings of music, and “knock-offs” of high-end designer apparel items. Now, you may be wondering why the authenticity of the item is critical.  Manufacturers of high-end items such as handbags and apparel feel that replicas decrease the value of the original. d%26b.jpg

This concept is a supply and demand issue – the larger the supply of an item, the lower the demand, and subsequently, the lower the price. Say for example, eBay allows counterfeit Coach bags to be sold on their site. Soon, there will be hundreds or thousands of replica Coach bags available for sale to anyone in the world. How many customers will decide to purchase a cheap imitation rather than the real thing, if it is readily available? The sale of counterfeit handbags is such a huge problem, there are even attorneys who specialize in prosecuting the manufacturers.

Furthermore, if you are caught listing or selling counterfeit items on eBay, your account can be suspended or even terminated. Many companies such as Tommy Bahama and Coach monitor items listed for sale on eBay and your item will be reported and removed if it does not appear to be authentic.

Bottom line: When selling high priced designer items, verify that the item is 100% authentic before listing it for sale on eBay. Check this resource to learn how to spot counterfeit handbags.

bull....there are thousands of fakes sold every day on ebay...strict policy against...no way

Thanks for your comment, Anonymous. I think the point here is that eBay can only take action if the items are reported by other users or thru the VERO program. I absolutely agree that there are thousands of counterfeit items on eBay, no one can argue that point.

I advise against selling replica items on eBay. As a Power Seller with over 14,000 sales, I have had a few items removed by eBay - I didn't even know they were fakes. As the saying goes, "It is always fun until you get caught!"

It's good to hear that Ebay has strict policies on this. THanks for visiting Mamalaw!

I say sell what you want!! Screw your rules! Ebay is ran by retarded monkeys anyways......

Great article Suzanne, in my opinion Ebay truly needs to do more to protect its buying members from counterfeit and fake sellers. They catch the odd seller here and there and yes they suspend those sellers. But, the problem of fake goods is much bigger than simply suspending a seller. There is evidence to prove that as much as 70% of so called new items sold on ebay are fakes. I found some very interesting articles on this site http://www.ebay100.blogspot.com

As consumers we need to be a little more careful of what we buy.

All well and good that Ebay have policies against sellers listing Fake designer items.

But they don't follow through with reports they get from Ebay members who report the sellers of fake items, or for that matter other reports of sellers who blatently break the rules.

Seems to be that if you are a seller who pays lots and lots of fee's to Ebay, then you can pretty much do as you please.
