Bootleg ebooks are at the core of a battle between eBay and Harry Potter author, JK Rowling. Electronic copies of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows have shown up on the on the internet and publishers fear millions will be lost due to the bootleg copies.
eBay's VERO program was put in place to monitor copyright and other illegal actions, but the VERO program relies on users and the owner of the copyright to police the eBay auction site.
Publishers suggest that the rush of copies will be impossible to track and that eBay should accept additional responsibility for what is being sold on it's site.
"We and JK Rowling believe eBay should take preventative steps to avoid pirate goods being offered for sale to innocent fans, said Neil Blair, Rowling's legal adviser.
