eBay Raises Fees Again Effective Jan 30th

Effective Januaray 30th, eBay will be raising it's fees again.

Here are the details:

Insertion Fees
We're increasing the Insertion Fee for the $1.00 to $9.99 level from thirty-five cents to forty cents.

Final Value Fees
We're increasing the Final Value Fee for the $25.01 to $1,000.00 level from 3% to 3.25%.

Please note that there are no fee adjustments for eBay Stores or Store Inventory listings.

eBay Motors Fees
The Insertion Fees and Final Values Fees mentioned above will also apply to eBay Motors Parts & Accessories categories.

For eBay Motors Vehicles categories, we are making these adjustments:

  • The Transaction Services Fee for both Motorcycles and Powersports is increasing from $30.00 to $40.00.
  • The Transaction Services Fee for Cars & Trucks and all Other Vehicles & Trailers categories is increasing from $40.00 to $50.00.
  • The Motors Reserve Fee is changing from a flat $5.00 to 0.1% of the reserve price, with a minimum of $5.00 and a maximum of $10.00. (The Reserve Fee is refunded when bidding meets the reserve price.)

Sell though prices and traffic is down on the auction site so the only way easy way to show growth in revenue is to raise fees, again.

Bill Cobb, President, eBay North America claims the changes are "modest" but some are reporting the change could mean an additional 4-7% more in fees.

It's hardly a surprise that Ebay are introducing another fee hike. Why don't they just cut the crap regarding 'market dynamics' and just steal everyone's money out of their paypal accounts? Of course that would be illegal, but Ebay seem to escape advocating crime on their site anyway!(Google 'Counterfeit goods')

The only hope is that the alternatives to ebay will capitalise on this latest money grab by Ebay. You can find some of them here:

This is leading to eBay sellers trying to figure out more and more innovative ways of selling outside eBay.

A friend of mine is a programmer and one of his customers had him write a program to do following :
1) Retrieve the list of bidders and the corresponding items from his ebay id.
2) Create a shopping cart for that user in his own store. If the user does not exist create the user.
3) Send out email to the user with the link saying we have your products ready to ship just make the payment using the link below and the goods will ship immediately.

Using this technique this guys is able to sell to each of his bidder instead of just the highest bidder and avoid commission on all but one buyer.
