There are several ways. When you receive an email like this, make sure you check with eBay and ask if it is from them. If it isn't, then report the details of the email. Another trick they will sometimes use, and it is very convincing, is that you need to enter your information in within a time period, which is usually very short, or else your account could be deleted. If you stop to think about it, it becomes quite obvious that there is no reason for a time period, and even if there was, you could always call eBay to confirm that the email is from them.
In any case, play it safe. Always ask the company claiming to send you the email or phone number before you act on it. It can result in identity theft, and stolen credit card information. Safe buying and selling!
